Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

    Directed by: David Yates

    Screenplay by: Steve Kloves

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and Ralph Fiennes

    Time: 151 mins.

    Rating:

     3 stars!

Yes! It’s here! Fans rushing to the theatres at 12:00 AM on November 19th  to catch the premiere of the long-awaited first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But did it do as well as we hoped?

The movie opens with Voldemort, Snape, and the Death Eaters planning for the day that Harry shall be killed, when he is being moved to safety. On “Moving Day”, Harry and his friends are flying through the air on their way to the Burrow when they are ambushed by Death Eaters. A thrilling flying motorcycle chase scene ensues (I really enjoyed this part), with Hagrid at the handlebars and Harry at his side. They escape Voldemort right after he appears.  Everyone else arrives unharmed, with the exception of George (he lost an ear and still joked about it) and Mad-Eye and the owl Hedwig who died. A few days later, Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour’s wedding is cut short due to another attack by the Death Eaters, and so Harry, Ron, and Hermione have to quickly search for and destroy the five remaining Horcruxes, each containing a piece of Voldemort’s soul, while the Ministry of Magic is now overrun by evil and is in the process of hunting down Muggle-born wizards. Our heroes also learn of the Deathly Hallows, three items that will play an important role in Part 2 of the film (in theatres June/July 2011).

Overall, I found the pace of the movie was sort of slow. Just like Ron said “Why are we sitting around doing nothing? We haven’t even found any Horcruxes yet!”  Don’t get me wrong. I love the Harry Potter series. While the film stayed true to the novel, nothing really seemed to happen in two and a half hours.  To write more on this subject might spoil the rest of the movie. I felt that the ending was abrupt, though there might not have been a better place to end it.

On a positive note, the acting and action scenes are consistent with the previous films and keep the viewer interested. There are bouts of humour throughout the film, as in the beginning, when Harry’s friends use Polyjuice potion to change into him, and Fleur says (in the form of Harry with a bra and a French accent) “Bill, don’t look at me… I’m ‘ideous”. The special effects are great (ex: Apparating/Dissaparating, and the smoke blasting out of the locket after Ron stabs it).

All in all, a pretty good performance by a “somewhat” cast; many of the usual cast members haven’t appeared yet. Great cinematography, and awesome special effects, the movie turned out to be good.

For all of you who have seen the movie, I’m sure you’ll agree: I CAN’T WAIT ‘TILL PART TWO!!!!

    Dear Diary,

Sometimes, or mostly, all the time, people wonder what if? What if they lose their best friend? What if they lose their brother? What if they died? People wonder what would happened if they lose someone special to them. It is from god message? Why do these things happen? We don’t know, but what we know is someone dies every single day, and it hurts a lot of people.

But that’s not it, what if they won million dollars? What if their having a new born sister? What if they found their soul mate? There are always good “what ifs”, and bad ones too. We never seem to know when or how we think of these things, but the question is… why?

    Jackie Taschereau

    Dear Diary,

Many teenagers think they’re going to survive, but that’s not true. Many preteens watch movies about high school life, before going to high school. They want to be the “popular” kid, or maybe “jock”, or anything that they want to be in high school. The truth is, trust is the most important things in teenage life. That’s the real truth. You’re going to meet people, but only become friends with them later.  You might realize they used you, they changed for who you are. Most of them suffer through rumors, relationships, fighting with parents, etc. Its hard life, and they thought it was going to be a good life until they find about the truth about growing up.

All I can say to you, is don’t be afraid of being who you are because if you’re not, then I promise you’re not living the real life.

    Music Review

On September 27th, Lil Wayne released his 8th studio album called “I Am Not A Human Being”. The name was given to this album after Wayne described his music as “out of this world”.

This album is not my personal favourite by Wayne, but its still hype and better then his last rock album. I found a few re-used verses from previous songs. As well, he was in jail, so his producers did not have much material to work with.

I also felt as if he was a guest on his own album, he featured T Streets, Lil’ Twist, Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Chuckee, Jea Millz, Gudda Gudda, Tyga and Drake 5 times. On the plus side, the beats of the album were very good and the songs had many punch lines.

My favourite tracks off this album were

    -          Right Above It ft. Drake

    -          YM Salute ft. Gudda Gudda, Lil’ Twist, Lil’ Chuckee, Jea Millz and Nicki Minaj.

    -          Popular ft. Lil’ twist

    Album rating: 2.5 stars

    Medal of Honor Review

Medal of Honor has been discharged by EA (electronic arts) due to gamers and critics alike from Medal of Honor Airborne. Two years later Medal of Honor (2010) has re-enlisted into the fray of military first person shooters. Is it worth the nomination or should it be dishonorably discharged?

The story is set in modern day Afghanistan where a group of insurgents, named the Taliban, has threatened the land and its people. The U.S military comes in to stop the conflict. You play as multiple characters similar to the Call of Duty franchise. The length of the story is short, 4 to 5 hours a play. You do not get attached with the other characters, except Dusty leader of AFO Wolf pack; he is like the captain Price of Medal of Honor. I really had high potential for the multiplayer to be great because it was developed by a very good developer. When I started to play my excitement for the game slowly turned to disappointment. Sadly, it makes me want to break the disc because it is horrible. The hit detection is way off, sometimes you have to do things twice for it to register. The leveling system is not very good at all. There’s only 15 levels and not worth it for a multiplayer component. It does have a fascinating kill streak system; you can chose for a defensive or offensive action example. The graphics sometimes great and other times it is awful. The ballistic and destruction engine is also gone, because the multiplayer models blends into all the environments in the multi-player maps. They tried to make it as cinematic as possible but there is no interaction in the cut scenes. The sets the tone on the conflict, they’re surprisingly very good. The gun sound on the other hand is not even close to the real thing. Overall, the sounds are good, but they needed more work. The controls are very responsive but they’re a copy of Call of Duty’s controls. In the single player mode you can go prone, but not in multiplayer mode. It’s good, but as I said before, it needs more work.

It is a good reboot for the series, but there are so many problems with the overall design. Don’t buy this game unless you want the battlefield three beta codes! I say use that code and send it to the nearest EB games, and try to get your seventy bucks back. Medal of Honor gets an ok score of 6.5 out of 10.

    Food.

Food is nice. Food is tasty. Food looks great, a little brownish. Food is soft, sometimes hard. Food could be a little crisp, other times it’ll break your jaw. I like food. Food is that bright light that flashes on the side of your pillow when you creek your eyes open.  Food is the “EEEEP.EEEEP.EEEP. EEEEP.”

    “Uugh. Morning already.”

Food is that horrible feeling when you leave the comfort of your warm mattress, onto the cold floor and into the cold air. It seems to always go for the legs first.  Food is the red cherries of 8:40am death staring at you on your bedside, on the wall, and on your microwave. It’s letting you know you shouldn’t have gone to bed at 2:00am playing Halo: Reach. Food was what you were listening to on the way to school. It entertains you and lets you forget the annoying repetition of the sights in your neighbourhood. Food is the left-right sway of the trees as they dance in balanced shades of red to orange. Reminding you, that maybe your neighbourhood isn’t as boring as you thought 5 seconds ago.  Food is the energy; the bursting of jam out of the pastry and into your mouth as you step into the loud, energetic hallways. Food is the feeling of approaching your friends, as they wait to add another spice of personality into the soup of entertainment and conversation. You enjoy the succulent, juicy information as friends feed you what’s going on, who did what, where, why and how. Food is that warm, sweet gush through your teeth when the funny guy says something awesome, with a bitter aftertaste from that guy who thinks he’s funny but he’s not funny.

Food is the spicy bell pepper that rings in your ears, right when the conversation was just getting good. Food is the bland taste of the people with robot faces walking behind you and in front of you, some you know, most you know only by name. Food is when you are in French class, listening to that wet piece of bread yelling her whole grains out about how no one’s listening to her, or something like that. Food is the colourful view of the various sushi trains, in their green hoodies and Canadian tuques, all going to one place: the door, because school is over.

Well that was fast. Either way, whatever day you have, or are expecting to have today, whether your food tastes great or tastes bad, remember to not stress it, there’s always more food to come.

    Movie Review

The top movie this month: is a tie between “The Social Network” (directed by David Fincher ) and “The Town” ( directed by Ben Affleck).

“The Social Network” tells the story of the invention and rise of Facebook from the point of view of its creator, Mark Zuckerberg, portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg. Although mostly fictional, the movie has not yet seized to impress North America as it made 22,445,653$ in the opening weekend in the United States.

“The Town” is a movie about a bank robber in Charlestown, Boston who struggles to keep secrets when he falls in love with the manager of the bank that he just robbed. Ben Affleck directs and plays the main character, Doug Macrae, an Irishman in his mid-twenties. This movie somehow pulls off the perfect amount of romance and action to make it one of the top movies this month.
